Lives and Works in
Kaarina-Sirkku Kurz (Finnish/ German) is a German-Finnish photographer and visual artist currently based in Berlin. She studied in Bremen, Lahti and Helsinki where she graduated with a Master’s degree from the Department of Photography at Aalto University School of Arts. Her series Supernature, still in progress, presents in a very conceptual way her concern and fascination for the human body, something that she has already begun to work in her previous award-winning project UNGLEICHGEWICHT. The photobook of the same name won the Nordic Dummy Award in 2015 and was published by Kehrer Verlag. In 2017 the publication was honored with the Finnish Photobook of the Year Award, organized by the Association of Photographic Artists and The Finnish Museum of Photography. Photographer Alec Soth chose the winner. The coherence of her discourse and career, her way of getting into the subjects she photographs, with a very particular narrative, make Sirkku's work particularly interesting to us. In addition, being in a project which is in progress, we believe that Futures will give her opportunities and opinions to continue or find exhibition opportunities for it.

Supernature

I am fascinated by the human body, which is substantive and at the same time sensing, thus it is object and subject. I enjoy investigating this phenomenon from different angles and photographically explore ways of how people deal with their bodies. Currently I approach the issue of body modification in the context of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The body of work is still in progress.

Varvara Uhlik
Varvara Uhlik (b.1997, Ukraine) is a London-based visual artist who explores themes of Slavic culture and identity, with a focus on the post-Soviet era’s impact on her generation. Working across photography, installation, and video, Varvara often reworks archival materials, bringing them into dialogue with contemporary narratives and newly produced work. Through this process, she examines the tension between past and present, reality and its digital afterlife, foregrounding the impermanence of our surroundings and the fragility of memory. In 2024, the British Journal of Photography recognised Varvara as a Ones to Watch artist. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at The Sunday Painter, London; Photo Élysée Museum, Switzerland; European Photography Month, Tokyo; MIA Milan Photo Fair, Italy; Encontros da Imagem, Portugal; and Liquida Photofestival, Italy. Her work has appeared in publications such as The Guardian, Beaux Arts Magazine, Photoworks, Riga Photography Biennial 2025, Der Greif, and LensCulture, among others.

Weronika Bela & Ivar Hagren
Weronika Bela (born 1988, Baerum) and Ivar Hagren (born 1986, Stockholm) are an artist duo based in Stockholm. In their project based practice, they work with the historical conditions of analog photography, its materiality and phenomena. They work with subtle visual worlds and develop associative stories in still images and video essays. They both have a master's degree in fine arts from Konstfack. Hagren/Bela were Iaspis studio fellows in 2022 and received the Hasselblad Foundation's nature photography scholarship in 2024.

Mahalia taje Giotto
Mahalia Giotto, aka taje (b. 1992), is a Lausanne-based visual artist working across photography, performance, installation, and archives. Originally trained in international relations at the University of Geneva, they later turned to photography, earning a Master’s degree from ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne in 2022.‍Their work is deeply shaped by their personal journey as a trans non-binary person. Fascinated by androgynous figures in animated series, taje experienced gender fluidly in childhood. However, adolescence imposed binary expectations that never felt right. Their transition, including starting hormone therapy in 2020, profoundly influenced their life and artistic practice.‍Among their notable projects, existential boner merges photography, collage, text, and scans to construct an intimate yet radical self-portrait. Studio portraits, vernacular snapshots, and handwritten annotations create a raw, urgent narrative—part personal history, part deconstructed archive. Their installations increasingly incorporate text and graffiti-like interventions, turning space into a site of both personal reflection and public confrontation. The project was exhibited at Images Vevey, in a solo show at SPBH Space in Milan, and won the Swiss Design Awards in 2024. It was published as a book by ECAL and SPBH in July 2023.‍Currently, taje is developing, on the verge of becoming completely forgotten, a three-part project examining masculinity as a force that is both protective and isolating.

Graduated in Political Science and Urban Sociology, his work unfolds in territories left, maintained or deliberately built on the fringes of our cities. He takes them on over a long period of time and draws up a personal cartography, walking a fine line between documentary and fine art photography. He attaches particular importance to form, colour and material, which serve as points of encounter with his mental universe. In this way, he constructs a visual language that is both frontal and polysemous, offering a singular vision in which human frailties are transfigured by new lines of force. His work is regularly exhibited at festivals in France and abroad, like Athens Photo Festival, Tbilisi Photo Festival, Les Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles or Circulation(s). He was awarded the Maison Blanche Prize in 2021.

Olga Bushkova
Olga Bushkova (*1988 in Rostov-on-Don, RU) is an artist based in Zurich who has been deeply engaged with photography since 2011, using it as a tool to deal with everyday life issues. Her works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Switzerland and internationally, including at the Photoforum Pasquart in Biel, the Fonderia 20.9 in Verona, the IMAGO Gallery in Lisbon, the Jungkunst in Winterthur, and the Musée Visionär in Zurich. In her photo books A Google Wife (Dalpine, 2017) and How I Tried to Convince My Husband to Have Children (Witty Books, 2020), she explores themes such as migration, integration, and parenthood from a personal perspective. She is a member of SIYU, the pool collective, and near. Since 2016, she has been working on the long-term project A Photo at 12 (working title), in which she reflects on her communication with her father through photography.

Anna Safiatou Touré
Anna Safiatou Touré (Bamako, Mali, born in 1996) is a Franco-Malian multidisciplinary artist based in Brussels. She graduated from the Nantes Saint-Nazaire School of Fine Arts and the ENSAV La Cambre in photography. Anna Safiatou was awarded the Médiatine Prize in 2022 and the Roger De Conynck Fund in 2023-24. Her work explores the space that unites or separates the two sides of every migratory narrative. The journey through this personal, historical, and cultural blending fills for her empty or unanswered spaces. On her own scale, she wishes to materialize this absence by creating her own evidence to make history heard—rendering the absence visible to tell stories from these new bodies. Like a certain poetry of emptiness, couldn’t the world be told in reverse, like a stencil, from the edge?

Filips Smits

Filips Smits (b. 1996, Rīga) is a Latvian visual artist working with analogue photography, staged scenarios, and interventions in public space. His practice
explores how urban environments and light shape bodily experience, social rituals, and forms of togetherness, reframing everyday reality through a surreal and poetic lens. Influenced by Situationist psychogeography and the dérive, Smits approaches the city as a living organism structured by visible architecture and hidden social codes.
He is a nominee for the Latvian Annual Art Award and the recipient of the FK Prize for Best Young Latvian Photographer. His central long-term project, Let’s Get Sun-Kissed, investigates rest, presence, and rituals of renewal in the Baltic context, shaped by northern light, short summers, and post-Soviet urban landscapes. Through collaborative, carefully staged photographic situations, Smits examines how moments of stillness can quietly challenge behavioral norms and reimagine public space as a site of intimacy, vulnerability, and collective experience.

Daria Svertilova

Daria is a lens-based artist currently living and working between Kyiv and Paris. Originally from Odesa, Ukraine, Daria came to France to pursue an M.A. in Photography & Video at École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs of Paris, graduating in 2023.
In her artistic practice, Daria explores the connections between past and present, focusing primarily on the youth and cultural, social and political contexts in which young people live.
Her work was exhibited across Europe and the U.S., including La Villette (Paris), Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool), Hangar (Brussels), Mystetskiy Arsenal (Kyiv), The Gallery at Dobbin Mews (New York). Daria is a finalist of the 39th Hyères festival (2024), Palm* Phot Prize (2022) and a recipient of Beyond the silence grant by Magnum Photos & Odesa Photo Days (2024), as well as a grant for contemporary documentary photography from CNAP.

Máté Bartha
Máté Bartha (1987) is a Budapest-based visual artist working in the intersection of photography and theory-fiction. His practice is driven by a mission to reenchant the world through world-building, impersonation and constructing personal and collective mythologies. His work proposes new narratives by blending symbolic and subjective interpretations of his usual field of observation, the metropolis, treating urban spaces as arenas for imaginative transformation. Bartha’s works often combine staged and documentary imagery, archival material, and speculative narrative forms, and have been published and exhibited widely. Bartha holds Master’s degrees in Photography (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, 2011) and Documentary Filmmaking (University of Theatre and Film Arts, 2016), and is currently a doctoral student at MOME. His first photobook, Common Nature (2014), explored the ambivalence of urban space as a mirror of the unconscious. Kontakt (2018), a coming-of-age portrait of Hungarian military youth camps, was awarded the Louis Roederer Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles (2019). His recent project Anima Mundi, a fictional urban encyclopedia of cosmic order, received the Main Jury Prize at Les Boutographies, Montpellier (2024). His ongoing work, The Dice Man, is a chance-based photographic pilgrimage through grief, memory, and city space.

Vitalii Halanzha
Vitalii Halanzha (b. 1991) is a Ukrainian artist photographer living and working in Kyiv. His artistic practice involves engagement with the landscape, employing it as a dynamic medium to explore the complex relationships between natural processes and society. In his recent work, Halanzha investigates the intersection of the enduring presence of warfare, environment, and perception. Using a restrained visual language, he documents the quiet aftermath of war. Avoiding the scenes of destruction, he invites viewers to observe what lingers - the latent threat, the buried remnants, the psychological and environmental imprints. Vitalii has been selected as an artist for the third cycle of the Parallel Photo Platform in 2019-20. His works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and festivals, such as Landskrona Foto, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Odesa Photo Days, Lodz Fotofestiwal, Photo London, etc. In 2025, he is one of the nominated artists for the FUTURES European Photography Platform.

Salvatore Vitale
Salvatore Vitale (b. 1986, Palermo, Italy) is a Swiss-based artist, director, and professor whose work explores the complexity of contemporary societies. Using expanded and speculative storytelling through mixed media techniques, he focuses on the politics of systems that regulate modernity and the impact of technological transformations. Vitale is the Artistic Director of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival and FUTURES Photography, both international platforms dedicated to contemporary photography. He also serves as a Professor at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, where he leads the Transmedia Storytelling Programme. Previously, he was the co-founder and editor-in-chief of YET magazine, an international photography publication. Vitale’s work has received international awards. Angel Luis Gonzalez Fernandez

Ángel Luis González Fernández is a designer, artist, and curator supporting engaging visual arts practices, winner of Business to Arts David Manley Emerging Entrepreneur Awards 2011.

His work manifests through PhotoIreland, which he founded in 2010 to stimulate a critical dialogue on Photography. He devises curatorial projects placing conversations in the public realm around visual culture, critical thinking. These include events (PhotoIreland Festival, Halftone Print Fair, arts residency How to Flatten a Mountain, and New Irish Works), a cultural hub (The Library Project: Ireland’s Art bookshop, host to a unique resource library of photobooks and a productive arts programme), publishing projects that distribute inexpensive access to local practices, research projects (Critical Academy: examining contemporary art practices). He works collaboratively with a growing network of organisations, noticeably through ambitious Creative Europe partnerships.

During the Summer 2020 lockdown he launched the critical publication OVER Journal, now distributed globally. He received the Arts Council of Ireland’s Visual Arts Bursary to deepen research on the broad historical and specific artistic context of Photography in Ireland, to curate an ambitious survey exhibition in PhotoIreland Festival 2022 and to publish a series of publications on the matter. He regularly contributes to publications such as the forthcoming The Routledge Companion to Global Photographies, edited by Lucy Soutter, Duncan Wooldridge.

Iveta Gabalina

Iveta Gabaliņa (1979) is a curator, artist and educator. She has studied photography at the studio of Andrejs Grants, at Bournemouth Art Institute, and in the MA programme at Alto University in Helsinki. Her work has been exhibited in Latvia and internationally, including at C/O (Berlin, Germany), GESTE (Paris), and Williams Tower Gallery (Houston, USA). Gabaliņa has participated in photography festivals in Singapore, Hanover, and elsewhere. Her work is included in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Geste Paris, and the Deutsche Börse Art Collection.
Since 2008 she has been part of ISSP team, responsible for numerous educational and curatorial projects. In 2018 she founded ISSP Gallery - an exhibition space dedicated to contemporary photography.

I’ve always loved photography, even if it sounds like a cliche. The first photos I took, I did without knowing how to do that, without paying any attention to framing, subject or composition. After a while, I began to understand what is happening in the space between me as a photographer and the subject I was photographing. And many years later, I also understood why I love to photograph. To communicate. A message, a concept, an emotion.
